Rehash an oldie but goodie whats my status COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Rehash an oldie but goodie… what’s my status COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog We get several inquiries from applicants each year asking about the status of their application…   I would wonder too if I had to wait weeks (sometimes months â€" depending on when you submitted your application) for an admission decision that could change my future plans… hopefully for the better. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we bring back to you an old post that’s definitely still applicable to this year that provides some tips on tracking your application. Tracking your application … after it’s been submitted. Please note that you cannot change any information on your application after it has been submitted.   Also, the date the application is recorded complete in our system has no impact on the admission decision.    What does matter is that all required application information is submitted by the deadline. Do not panic if you log in after you have submitted your application and see that it is not marked as complete.   It is normal for us NOT to have all applications completed for up to three weeks past the deadline.   We manually review each application for completion and this takes time. The application deadline is not the start and end date of when files are reviewed.   Applications are not all read at the same time â€" it’s just physically not possible.   The Committee reviews and discusses files until the end of our cycle.   So don’t worry if your application status does not indicate “COMPLETE” on February 5th.   If there is an issue with your application that needs to be addressed  we will contact you. Now on to the visuals . . . Scenario 1:   You Are Working on Your Application but Have Not Submitted It Let us start with what you see when you log in to the application system while your application is in progress and has not been submitted. Below is what you will see when you log in.   Note that next to Submission Status it says  â€œNot Submitted”  (at the end of the red arrow).   In this example, the applicant has also entered the names of the three recommenders and they are displayed, along with the status.     Scenario 2:   You Have Submitted Your Application When you log into your application after it has been submitted, the main page will show the message  â€œSubmission Status: Submitted”  (see arrow #1). You will also notice in this example that one letter of recommendation has been submitted (see arrow #2). At this point no documents will show up.   Do not worry; this is because we have not printed your application yet. Scenario 3:   We Print Your Application â€" This Does Not Typically Happen the Same Day You Submit The next step that will occur is that we will print (yes, PRINT) your application for review.   It can take up to 15 days for us to print your application after it has been submitted.    Please do not panic if your application has not been printed.  The important thing is that your application is submitted by the deadline. If you look at this next picture you will notice two changes from the picture above. First, the status has changed to  â€œApplication Printed â€" Manual Review of All Information Submitted In Progress”  (see the red arrow #1). Second, arrow #2 shows that we have not marked your application as complete because we have not finished our manual review.   We need to make sure we can read your transcripts for example. Third, you will notice that transcripts, test scores, and other supporting documents now appear (see red arrow #3).    Please note that the default status for the following documents, if you uploaded a document, at the time your application is printed is “Received â€" Official” Academic Resume International Fellows Program Essay Personal Statement Standard/CV Resume We find that the vast majority of our applicants submit documents that are legible and complete so the default status is  â€œReceived â€" Official.”  Do note that in some cases there are issues with these documents and if so, we will contact you.  Special Note:  the IFP, Lemann, and Harriman statements are not mandatory so if you did not submit a statement, your status may show: Not Applicable, Not Received, or Waived. Above the “Other Supporting Documents” section you will see test scores and transcripts.    Please note that the default status for the test scores and transcript(s) when your application is printed is “Not Received” â€" even if you self-reported/entered your scores.   This is the same for transcripts.   We will perform a manual check to make sure we have all of the information we need and track any missing items.   If there is an issue we will contact you. Please note we do not verify official test reports until after admission offers are made â€"WE ONLY USE SELF-REPORTED SCORES  to make admission decisions so please do not contact us now to see if we have your official scores on file. In the above example the native language of the applicant is English so TOEFL is marked “Not Applicable.”   If English is your second language this will read “Not Received”. The last comment for this example is, please ignore the message on the bottom near arrow #4 that says “Submission Status: Not Submitted.”   It references a part of the application we no longer use but it is hard coded into the system and cannot be changed â€" it means nothing.  Scenario 4:   Complete â€" All Documents Tracked But Not Sent to Committee This next picture shows that we have everything we need.   All the letters are submitted.    Your unofficial transcripts and self-reported test scores are in the system and used for admission review.   However the status shows “Incomplete”  and above that you will notice is still says “Manual Review of All Information Submitted in Progress.” Once a final sign off is given then the file is sent to the Committee.   This example is awaiting the sign off. Scenario 5:   Complete . . . But with a Question This next shot shows you the message “Documents still pending â€" Application is Under Review” with the Application Status below that reads “Complete.” This is a case when we have everything we need, however there may be an issue we feel we need to resolve before the file is sent to the Committee.   This may be an internal application processing flag.   There is no need for you to contact us if this is your status.   If we have a concern, we will contact you directly.  Scenario 6:   Complete â€" Sent to Committee! This final shot is when you know your application has been sent to Committee.   You will also receive an email from us when your file is complete in case you do not want to compulsively log into the system to keep checking the status! You can see on the top that it states “Application Complete â€" No additional documents.”    As a reminder, please ignore the submission status at the bottom.   It has nothing to do with your application, so ignore it. Thank you for your patience as we work to process several thousand files in a short period of time.   If documents were submitted by mail it will likely take us longer to complete your file. Just one final reminder if you missed last week’s post… The fall 2013 application deadline has been extended to February 5th â€" so if you need more time to pull together your application, you got it.   However, if you wish to be considered for one of coveted first year fellowships, please make sure you complete and submit your application by January 5th.   Applicants, who submit after the January 5th deadline, may submit a separate scholarship application for one of the 13 SIPA Named Scholarships offered. Good luck!   We’re looking forward to reviewing your application.

Russia Economy Free Essays

Since attaining her independence in the early 1990’s Russia can pride herself in emerging as a middle economy which has registered an average annual economic growth rate of 6. 5%. This is largely attributed to her embracing a free market economy to replace the earlier central command approach. We will write a custom essay sample on Russia Economy or any similar topic only for you Order Now The World Bank notes that this economic growth has seen the number of people living in extreme poverty reduced. Trade especially exports of natural resources for instance oil and gas blended with stability in the macroeconomic policies adopted can be blamed economic achievement. However, there are major challenges that threaten this success story. The need for diversification of the economy, adoption of environmental conservative measures like the fight against deforestation has intensified in the increasingly globalized economy. Various non governmental organizations (NGOs) as well as international institutions have played a significant role in ensuring that this goal is attained. In the process, losers as well as winners have emerged. Many NGOs have been at the forefront to chip in their devoted efforts to resolve the deforestation problem in Russia. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Russia, an environmental based organization advocates for sustainable forestry in Russia. In the recent times global warming issues have intensified and are a cause of concern due to the effects on climate change. (WWF, 2009). WWF Russia has intensively ensured that this information is disseminated across Russia. It adopts collaborative measures with the owners of the forests as she works to realize this goal. The objective is to ensure that CO2 emissions, a greenhouse gas responsible for global warming are reduced. WWF highlights the effects of deforestation on wildlife as well as on human beings. It advocates for responsible forestry especially in the timber trade. WWF Russia is also committed to ensuring that the Russian artic and the wildlife there are also conserved. The biodiversity of the Northern Caucasus region must be protected from deforestation, wild fires and poaching if the wildlife contained there is to remain unharmed. In this regard, WWF Russia ensures that companies control their spillage or observe safe or responsible waste management practices. It also encourages responsible fishing. Joint efforts are vital if this goal is to be attained. WWF Russia advocates for ‘the protection of water sheds as well as the limited soil disturbances to ensure positive effects on the timber harvested’. (WWF, 2009). Another important environmental NGO is Green Peace which also advocates for conservation of forests. Green Peace has registered success by reducing the felling of trees especially in the North Western parts as well as the Russian Far East regions. (Greenpeace) In addition to the environmental organizations, there are human rights organizations like Indem foundation which have been committed towards promoting democracy in Russia. This is done through collaborative efforts with the civil societies, public officials as well as government organizations. Major issues addressed by Indem include anti corruption, issues of international cooperation, reforms in the government and the political arena as well as justice assistance. This NGO tries to ensure that people know their rights and follow the right procedures to have them respected. (Indem Foundation, 2005). International institutions like the EU and the World Bank have also played a significant role in influencing Russia. The World Bank highlighted the need to ensure diversification of the economy to allow equitable growth while reducing the poverty levels. In an effort to ensure that Russia moved with the modern times where globalization is enhanced the World Bank created a 3 year strategy. The main objective in the strategy adopted would be to ensure sustained growth, improved management especially in public led institutions, increased social services as well as increased role of the nation at a global level. Russia was expected to participate in global activities like assisting the less developed countries. (World Bank, 2009). Among the ways in which Russia can diversify her economy is through the promotion of agriculture. This sector is however faced by many challenges like excess use of chemicals, wrong choice of crops as well as extreme or excess farming. Another important industry is forestry which has also faced a lot of problems in the recent past. Exploitative foreign companies and criminal organizations have negative effects on the forestry industry. Other challenges include wild fires, pests as well as pollution from the industries. (Library of congress, 2006). Russia showed her interests in registering with World Trade Organization in 2005, a move that was expected to place her at a competitive edge in as far as her economic growth and development are concerned. However her failure to adhere to the stipulated rules for instance strict adherence to intellectual property rights sees her blocked from admission by some great economies for instance the US. (Palmer D, 2009). This has seen different bodies in Russia advocating for a change in how people perceive intellectual property rights. The need to view them as an investment has now become vibrant. Russia is a member of the EU, another international organization and she continues to accrue related gains. There are certain rules to be followed by all members of the EU community. Russia collaborates with the EU to modernize the economy, on security matters, international relations as well as on regional cooperation. (EC) In an effort to strike a balance between the economical, environmental as well as social interests the forest owners will be losers. This is attributed to the fact that they will forego their financial gains as they adhere to the harvesting. The society will gain as a whole as the adverse effects of global warming will be reduced in a safer environment. Russia has also gained from the globalization process especially in her trading activities with the larger EU region. The poor and marginalized in Russia who forms approximately 20% of the population have also emerged as winners in the globalization process. (World Bank, 2009). This is attributed to the fact that international organizations like the World Bank have been committed to change their plight. World Bank has been involved in collaborative research activities to find ways of how more jobs can be created. It also assists in health care provision by offering equipment as well as in preventive approaches to curb diseases. World Bank also shows commitment to boost Russia’s education, fight against corruption as well as acquire a safe environment. (World Bank, 2009). There are many governmental as well as non governmental organizations that affect Russia’s performance in the global environment. These organizations may have a direct impact on the Russians for instance those that empower the human capital while others may indirectly affect man for instance those based on natural resources like wildlife and forests. Regardless of the direct or indirect impact these organization lead to the emergence of losers as well as winners in the society. All in all, the benefits of globalization are enormous and ought to be embraced as no country is self sufficient. References: Doug Palmer. 2009. Russia’s WTO bid still faces big U. S. obstacles. Sea Turtles in Costa Rica Need Help free essay sample

Costa Rica is home to many species of plants and animals, several of which are endangered species. Although Costa Rica is one of the leading nations in the green movement the country still has some bad practices and wildlife is suffering. Forests are often cut down to make way for cattle ranches and hotels for tourists are encroaching on already shrinking shore lines. This habitat loss is a problem for many species of both animals and plants. Three species whose populations are dwindling are the hawksbill, leatherback, and green sea turtles. Rising ocean waters are eating away at their nesting beaches from one end while hotels and beach houses take land on the other end. This is leaving less room for the turtles to lay eggs. According to Carlos Drews, a species coordinator for the World Wildlife Fund, if this pattern continues turtles will be nesting â€Å"between the tennis courts and swimming pools†. We will write a custom essay sample on Sea Turtles in Costa Rica Need Help or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Whether or not you believe in global warming, rising sand temperatures are having a devastating effect on these sea turtle populations. The gender of sea turtles is determined while they are developing in the egg, and it depends entirely upon the temperature of the sand they are buried in. At 85.4 degrees Fahrenheit a batch of eggs yields about 50% male and 50% female turtles. However, when the sand reaches 89.6 degrees all turtles will be female, and when the sand reaches 93 degrees all of the hatchlings die. Volunteers often relocate eggs to cooler sand so that the male to female ration can be balanced. Along with being threatened by habitat loss and rising temperatures sea turtle populations are also threatened by poachers. Elizabeth Rosenthal explains that young Costa Rican’s often look up to poachers because they make a lot of money; this is a problem because those young children then aspire to be poachers. Even people not looking for profit go to the beach to college turtle eggs to eat. They are considered a very tasting food by many locals who never stop to think about the animal that they are eating. Some Costa Rican’s are working to change this attitude by offering to let locals watch as newly hatched sea turtles are released for hatcheries and make their way toward the sea. Clearly Costa Rican wildlife needs protecting or many species will go extinct. Some locals are passionate about helping to rebuild sea turtle populations, but many more don’t care about the sea turtles or think of them as an important species on this planet. While the country is working on reducing their carbon footprint and slowing deforestation, many problems still exist and ate threatening endangered species. On top of everything else, the sea turtles are in more danger than ever with the current oil spill. Volunteers play a crucial role in providing service and educating locals so that work done to preserve sea turtles can continue after volunteers are gone.

Multiplication Tricks and Tips for Faster Learning

Multiplication Tricks and Tips for Faster Learning Like any new skill, learning multiplication takes time and practice. It also requires memorization, which can be a real challenge for young students. The good news is that you can master multiplication with as little as 15 minutes of practice time four or five times a week. These tips and tricks will make the job even easier. Use Times Tables Students usually begin learning basic multiplication by second grade. This skill will be essential as kids advance in class and study advanced concepts like algebra. Many teachers recommend using times tables to learn how to multiply because they allow students to begin with small numbers and work their way up. The grid-like structures make it easy to visualize how numbers increase as they are multiplied. Theyre also efficient. You can complete most times tables worksheets in one or two minutes, and students can track their performance to see how they improve over time. Using times tables is simple. Practice multiplying the 2s, 5s, and 10s first, then the doubles (6 x 6, 7 x 7, 8 x 8). Next, move to each of the fact families: 3s, 4,s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 11s, and 12s. Start by doing one sheet and see how long it takes you to complete it. Dont worry about how many right or wrong answers you get the first time you complete a worksheet. Youll get faster as you become better at multiplying.  Do not move to a different fact family without first mastering the previous one.   Play a Math Game Who said learning multiplication has to be boring? By turning math into a game, youre more likely to remember what youre doing. Try one of these  games  in addition to times tables worksheets. The 9 Times Quickie 1. Hold your hands in front of you with your fingers spread out.2. For 9 x 3 bend your third finger down. (9 x 4 would be the fourth finger)3. You have 2 fingers in front of the bent finger and 7 after the bent finger.4. Thus the answer must be 27.5. This technique works for the 9 times tables up to 10. The 4 Times Quickie 1. If you know how to double a number, this one is easy.2. Simply, double a number and then double it again! The 11 Times Rule #1 1. Take any number to 10 and multiply it by 11.2. Multiply 11 by 3 to get 33, multiply 11 by 4 to get 44. Each number  to  10 is just duplicated. The 11 Times Rule #2 1. Use this strategy for two-digit numbers.2. Multiply 11 by 18. Jot down 1 and 8 with a space between it. 1__8.3. Add the 8 and the 1 and put that number in the middle: 198 Deck Em! 1. Use a deck of playing cards for a game of multiplication war.2. Initially, children may need the grid to become quick at the answers.3. Flip over the cards as though you are playing Snap.4. The first one to say the fact based on the cards turned over (a 4 and a 5 Say 20) gets the cards.5. The person to get all of the cards wins!6. Children learn their facts much more quickly when playing this game on a regular basis. More Multiplication Tips Here are some easy ways to remember your times tables: Multiplying by 2: Simply double the number that youre multiplying. For example, 2 x 4 8. Thats the same as 4 4.Multiplying by 4: Double the number youre multiplying, then double it again. For example, 4 x 4 16. Thats the same as 4 4 4 4.Multiplying by 5: Count the number of 5s youre multiplying and add them up. Use your fingers to help count if you need to. For instance: 5 x 3 15. Thats the same as 5 5 5.Multiplying by 10: This is super-easy. Just take the number youre multiplying and add a 0 to the end of it. For instance, 10 x 7 70.   Want more practice? Try using some of these fun and easy  multiplication games  to reinforce the times tables.
